Kinini’s story began in 2008, when Jacqueline Turner and Malcolm Clear set up the charity “A New Beginning Rwanda”, with the goal to support Rwandan citizens displaced by the 1994 genocide. In 2012, they expanded their vision to growing coffee to create a sustainable revenue stream for the charity. Since then, 10% of the profits go directly to the charity, funding healthcare, clean water access and education projects. nearly half a million Bourbon Mayaguez seedlings were planted, alongside new nurseries and continued access to young trees. A lease was signed with local farmers, committing to providing seedlings, training and organisational support. In return, farmers deliver their cherries to the Kinini washing station. This coffee has been grown by smallholders in Rwanda’s Northern Province and processed at the Kinini washing station. Here the cherries are sorted, depulped and fermented in a series of tanks before being channelled to soaking tanks and dried for 48 days on raised beds. The result is a sweet, fruit-led cup with gentle citrus notes - a beautiful balance of sweet and tart like that of candied orange peel. Delicate floral notes are expressed in notes of redcurrant jelly.
