Mbilima
Tasting Notes
Description
Purple grape and cherry with a dense texture Origin: Northern Province, Rwanda Variety: Red Bourbon Processing Method: Honey Producers: Dukunde Kawa Cooperative Relationship Length: Since 2008 This coffee has notes of dried apricot and hibiscus tea with a floral finish. Mbilima is the highest altitude washing station of the Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, and it’s run almost entirely by women. Every lot processed here is 100% organic – a commitment that station manager Jean Bosco Habimana says has helped ‘to better the lives of our producers and quality of our coffee. It was a lot of work to get the certifications, but it also made us realise how many positive things we were already doing.’ The transition wasn’t without its challenges. Initially, yields dropped after farmers stopped using synthetic fertilisers, but within just a few years they began to see their trees becoming healthier and more resilient. Today, these producers are not only dedicated organic farmers – the practice itself has built an extraordinary sense of solidarity between them. For this delicious coffee, twenty of Mbilima’s organic smallholders combined their harvests.
